LEYLI & MAJNUN

- 2018 - Gouache, watercolour and ink on paper - 50 x 33 cm - Photographie Atelier 80

The story of Leyli & Majnun, from the persian poet Nizami, is that of a crazy, absolute love, between a man and a woman, a poet and a legendary beauty. It is also a love story that goes beyond carnal love to celebrate mystical love. Leyli (in persian, Leyla in arabic) becomes the symbol of theophany, the manifestation of the beauty of God in the world and Majnun (meaning ''possessed by the Jinns'') the human soul who loves until madness and ends up wandering in the desert looking for a sign of this love. It is the story of an endless quest for beauty, of oneself and of God. Called by Lord Byron'' the Romeo & Juliet of the East'', the legend of Leili & Majnun exalts the eternal feminine as a place of manifestation of the Divine.

Chaharshanbe Suri (Persian: چهارشنبه‌سوری‎ī, literally "Festive Wednesday'') is an Iranian festival celebrated on the eve of the last Wednesday before Nowruz, the Iranian New Year. Before the start of the festival, people gather outside and at sunset, after making bonfires, they jump over the flames, singing sorxi-ye to az man, zardi-ye man az to, literally meaning "let your ruddiness be mine, my paleness yours''. This is considered a purificatory practice.
